Playing Pétanque

Pétanque is a game that can be played by all ages and abilities together and is rapidly gaining in popularity world-wide. It can be played socially, competitively or both.   The club is affiliated to Pétanque England.

You can come along to the terrain and be playing Pétanque straight away – we have boules you can borrow.

Pétanque is played as singles (3 boules), doubles (3 boules each) or triples (2 boules) and the objective of the game is to throw your boules closer to the jack than your opponents. You stand in a plastic circle when throwing and the jack (cochonnet) is thrown between 6 – 10 metres.  The end finishes when all boules have been thrown and points are scored according to how many boules one team has closest to the jack.  The game is won by the first team to reach 13 points.

On club days everyone simultaneously throws one boule to a cochonnet (jack) and teams are chosen according to how they land.  Teams generally end up as a mix of experienced and less experienced players.
